| | | Raising AIDS awareness in society | | Posted Thursday, November 23, 2006 1:02:06 PM by Blog57 Team | | AIMING to banish the taboos surrounding the HIV/AIDS virus and wanting to force the public to take responsibility for its part in the social isolation and prejudice faced by HIV/AIDS carriers, the Red Cross Youth branch yesterday announced the start of its awareness campaign in the run up to World AIDS Day on December 1. The message of this years campaign is Do you know!, Red Cross president and First Lady Fotini Papadopoulou said. Papadopoulou said that despite the alarming HIV/AIDS statistics there was another moral and personal aspect of the problem to consider. Do we know that the virus is not transmissible through a simple hug and handshake? Do we know that these people have the right to live among us, have the right to equal opportunities and humane treatment? Do we know that the HIV/AIDS virus concerns us all? The Red Cross president said people should not only remember HIV/AIDS sufferers once a year, but every day.... | |

| | | College Preparation: Now is the Time | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 3:02:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | I am one of those people who is perturbed by the sight of holiday decorations stocked on store shelves a week after Labor Day. In September, I find it disconcerting to see those grocery store magazines telling me what everyone will be wearing in the Spring, when it hasn't gotten cool enough for me to put on my new winter coat. In October, I want to enjoy watching Linus shivering alone in the cold, waiting in vain for the Great Pumpkin to appear, before I start to anticipate Charlie Brown's friends transform his anemic little twig into a glorious Christmas tree. I suppose it is pretty clear that I like to enjoy each of the seasons, in season. However, when it comes to planning for college and secondary education I think it is never too early to look ahead and prepare for the future.... | |

| | | Refurbishment: outdoor rooms | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 11:08:44 PM by Blog57 Team | | Flick through any lifestyle magazine or switch on the TV and you cant fail to see evidence of the current consumer obsession with the newly termed outdoor room - formerly known as the garden! The public are turning their attention to the outdoors as a means to extend their living space and, with the media constantly tempting us with examples of designer living, they are keen to make sure their outdoors echoes the commitment to stylish design of any of their interior rooms. Add to this the constant plugging of the need to adopt a healthier lifestyle and the importance of dragging the kids away from the TV set or computer console and suddenly garden living has become the buzz-phrase of the noughties. But what relevance does this have to pubs? A revival of the pub garden is an obvious solution to the smoking ban due next summer, and far from being merely a seasonal offering to bolster trade during the summer months, various heating and shelter innovations mean the public can now have year-round access to it.... | |

| | | Scholars Test Out New Yardsticks of School Poverty | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 1:10:52 PM by Blog57 Team | | When education researchers want to measure the collective poverty level in a school, they typically use the same yardstick: the percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-rate meals under the federal school lunch program. But dissatisfaction with that indicator is prompting some researchers to cast about for better ways to gauge the socioeconomic status of schools. While those efforts are still in the preliminary stages, they reflect a broader debate about the adequacy of federal poverty indicators and could, in the long term, influence a wide range of education policy decisions affecting poor children. .... | |

| | | Kylie Bax sues over topless photos | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 11:18:17 AM by Blog57 Team | | New Zealand supermodel Kylie Bax has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against a French men's magazine for using bare-breasted photos of her on its wrapper, CBS news reports. Bax, 31, claims she did not give permission for the racy photographs, which were taken about six years ago, and used on the front and back of Max Magazine's April 2006 wrapper. No pictures of her appeared in the magazine. Bax contends in her lawsuit that the "cutting-edge, sexualised nature of the photographs" was inconsistent with the image she sought to develop. Bax, originally from Thames, has appeared on the cover international magazines including Vogue and Marie Claire, and featured in several movies. CBS said Bax claimed in her lawsuit she was never paid for the photos, and that the photographer, Antoine Verglas, gave the ahead for their use only after Max Magazine's parent company, Mondadori France, assured him it would receive Bax's permission before publishing them.... | |
