| The magazine for the modern man | | Posted Sunday, February 12, 2006 11:26:47 AM by Rose Martins | Magazines used to be a woman's thing. But not anymore. T here are men's magazines for the modern trendy man that are far superior in content, features, edition and imagery than the traditional woman's magazine.
There are magazines for men only, magazines for the black man, men's health magazines, men's fashion magazines and men's sport magazines, and then there is the men's magazine that covers a wide spectrum of the previously listed topics. In fact, men's magazines are taking the forefront of the magazine news stand. Gone is the stigma of the male magazine. Previously it was only business, sports and automobile magazines that were cool for men. Now many of the well known woman's magazine have a brother edition for the man.
The trendy man can now read articles covering topics like health, diet, exercise, their skin, what women want from a man, dating issues, sex issues, hair and hair loss problems and the hottest new fashion items for men, just to name a few. Men no longer have to be embarrassed to read a magazine and admit that not only to they read their magazine religiously, but they've even taken out a subscription!! ...

| | | Short Takes on Big Subjects | | Posted Saturday, January 20, 2007 3:10:29 PM by Blog57 Team | | Everything about an epic is large, right? The personalities, the emotions, the stakes. The seas are wider than in standard novels, the swords deadlier, the pages longer. The list of epics unread can seem guiltily endless, too, even for serious bibliophiles. But Penguin is here to help. The publisher has extracted brief highlights from 20 epics and published them individually in beautifully designed little books. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, meet "the king who knew the countries of the world . . . he brought us a tale of the days before the flood." In Siegfried's Murder, from the Nibelungenlied, discover how Siegfried was betrayed. (Word to the wise: When you bathe in dragon's blood to render yourself invincible, don't miss a spot.) In Apuleius's Cupid and Psyche, learn how a beautiful princess had to descend into hell to ascend immortal heights, "a story recited by an old woman to a terrified, kidnapped girl and overheard by the narrator (who has been transformed into an ass)." Perusing these tales will not be nearly so fraught for most readers; indeed, these slim volumes (the longest is 138 pages, the shortest only 71) offer tantalizing glimpses into strange worlds long gone that still resonate in the modern words we read.... | |

| | | Friday, December 22, 2006 | | Posted Sunday, December 24, 2006 3:08:55 PM by Blog57 Team | | By this time, if you don't know that there's a movie rolling out called "Dreamgirls," then you probably avoid television, radio, billboards, newspapers, magazines and public transportation. But let's say you do know all about this blockbuster film about a group of black singers and musicians starting out in the civil rights era that stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy. Do you know that it's based on a famous musical that brought people to their feet in the early 1980s? That the original trio of female singers called the Dreamettes (later Dreams) were Jennifer Holliday, Loretta Devine and Sheryl Lee Ralph? Not enough people do, according to some of the original cast members. A couple of them say the new players have snubbed them, changed their work and created a film that's about glitz and glamour that doesn't portray the real struggle of black musicians in the 1960s.... | |

| | | A feminist success story: Zine editor discusses pop culture, media | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:04:29 AM by Blog57 Team | | When Andi Zeisler graduated from college in 1996 and looked around at her pop culture-infused world, she and friend Lisa Jervis decided they needed to do something about the negative image of women that permeated the media.Together, they created "bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture," which started as a small online 'zine. Ten years later, it has expanded into a quarterly, nationally distributed print magazine with an accompanying Web site. The magazine has become known for its keen analysis of ad campaigns, sitcoms, movies and other news and entertainment media, and how those media portray women. "We have always a strong activist flavor and we always have a few pages of activist resources on various topics that need attention from everyone and that often fly under the mainstream radar," Zeisler said Thursday during a presentation at the Oregon State University Women's Center. The magazine's headquarters are in Oakland, Calif., but will be moving to Portland by the end of the year.... | |

| | | Beard goes a long way for Inkster's Benny Speer | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 3:14:12 PM by Blog57 Team | | O ne of Detroit's better-known, not-quite-struggling musicians just won a contest whose aim was to find America's best beard. Now, Benny Speer wants an agent. And a guest spot with Jay Leno. And maybe some movie parts. I suspect he's only going to get a reality check. But worst case, he'll also receive a free trip to Super Bowl XLI, which is a nice payoff for decades of looking disreputable. Speer, 51, lives in Inkster and fronts Benny and the Jets, an oldies band that continues to get gigs even while barrooms turn more and more to DJs or the dreaded karaoke. He submitted a photo of his long gray beard to Wahl Home Products, which makes trimmers, and won an online vote to become one of the company's Men of the Year. His prize, Wahl says, is "tickets and (a) trip to the biggest end-of-the-season pro football showdown in Miami." (In other words, Wahl isn't an official Super Bowl sponsor, so it can't say Super Bowl, though I can say Super Bowl as much as I care to, and I don't have to give the Super Bowl a dime.... | |

On Saturday, he continued to share his designs, made mostly of found objects, during the Holiday Banquet in Tyler. Viland of Luverne was one of the vendors who had holiday-themed goods to share at the annual banquet. Viland said he first got the idea for the decorations when he was limited in the variety of magazines he could read. I was over at my mothers and she had some magazines laying around of course, there werent any men magazines, said Viland. It was Country Women, so I picked it up and looked at it. I saw this in there. According to Viland, hes been working on his ornaments for the past 15 years, using everything from old chair legs to other found objects....

| | | Joey Hateley | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 7:13:03 AM by Blog57 Team | | Mixing experimental theatre, movement, photography, video and queer performance, A:Gender is a topical one-person show about female masculinity and the politics of identity that delves deep into one of the last remaining taboos in our society. Boys can be girls. Girls can be boys. Men can be women. Women can be men. Or can they? A:Gender is a funny and irreverent look at our notions of gender. It is devised and performed by the Manchester-based queer performance artist Joey Hateley. We caught up with her to find out more. What can we expect from the evening? Join me on a journey across the full spectrum of emotions; wonderment, fear, anger, comedy, tenderness, confusion and hope. To be inspired and entertained: turned inside out, broken down, spat out, put back together and be sent on your way with questions and / or a self-righteous self affirmed grin (and a sparkle in your eye the size of Bushs Ego). Do you believe that we all have fluid sexual characteristics? Some people have more fluid characteristics than others, but I think this is often misinterpreted.... | |
