A Rough Year for Magazines
Posted Thursday, February 01, 2007 3:02:50 PM by Blog57 Team
A year ago, the news magazine business was in a slump. The number of advertising pages sold was down in 2005 for many titles, and down precipitously at some of the biggest, including Time and Newsweek. The industry was hoping 2006 would bounce back. It didn't happen. Most of the news magazine titles—Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, The Economist, The Week, and The Atlantic—experienced a basically flat 2006, according to a count of ad pages by the Publishers Information Bureau. Two magazines broke from that pattern. The New Yorker had a particularly difficult year, and the National Journal enjoyed an unusually good one. News magazines were not unusual. The whole magazine industry was flat in 2006 (ad pages dropped .1% from 2005 to 2006)....

The Magazine Slide
Posted Saturday, December 09, 2006 1:06:00 PM by Blog57 Team
There was a time when, to assuage my need for information on things like sailing, finance, college football, etc., I subscribed to a couple dozen magazines. Now, with my days having become progressively more hectic and the Internet always at the ready, I'm down to just one magazine subscription. That reduction is more severe than the comparable decline in the number of newspapers that my family and I read -- now one, versus two not long ago -- and it's apparently more severe than the experience of others. But it does appear that the almost perceptible shifting of eyeballs to the Internet is hurting magazines, much as it has newspapers and broadcast news. As a result, while the ad lineage declines at most newspaper publishers, including New York Times (NYSE: NYT), Tribune (NYSE: TRB), and Belo (NYSE: BLC), have been documented with greater and greater frequency, magazine publishers like Time Warner (NYSE: TWX), Meredith (NYSE: MDP), and privately held Dennis Publishing and Conde Nast also have been watching their advertising pages decline meaningfully....

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Truth About Cars website (TTAC) has revealed the ten winners of its first annual "Ten Worst Automobiles Today" awards. According to the site's readers, the very worst vehicles sold in America today are… GM's minivans. For voting purposes, TTAC lumped all four of GM's virtually identical people movers together: the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, Buick Terraza and Pontiac SV6. In his description of the "winner," reviewer William C. Montgomery slated GM's minivans for their "antique engineering, woeful looks, cancerous effect on not one but four GM brands and their abject inability to hold a candle to their foreign-owned competition." In terms of dreadful driving dynamics, contemptible aesthetics and torturous ergonomics, no other vehicles sold in America can compete with these ridiculously-named 'Crossover Sport Vans.'" The automotive website's readers voted the new Jeep Compass America's second worst vehicle: a lackluster vehicle that betrays its storied brand's heritage....
